TELL ME MORE ABOUT MIND SHIFT’S PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS AND SUPPORT MODEL

At Mind Shift, our mission is to connect individuals with autism to meaningful, long-term employment opportunities that align with their strengths and abilities. In order to ensure successful and sustainable placements, we operate under a model that emphasizes independence in the workplace. Mind Shift provides thoughtful, proactive and responsive support; we do not offer continuous in-person assistance.

CAN I COMPLETE MIND SHIFT ACADEMY WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A PARENT?

All specialists are required to complete Mind Shift Academy independently. This process is a critical component of our evaluation and placement model. It allows our team to gain an accurate understanding of each candidate’s skills, communication style, strengths, and areas for growth.

Completing the Academy independently also indicates a candidate’s readiness to succeed in a work environment requiring independent work. For this reason, receiving outside assistance during participation in Mind Shift Academy is strongly discouraged.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF PARENTS, GUARDIANS, AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS?

We recognize and value the important role that parents, guardians, and support systems play in each individual’s success. Appropriate support may include:

  • Assisting with transportation to and from the workplace
  • Helping navigate technical issues related to accessing Mind Shift systems or communications
  • Providing general encouragement and support
  • Assisting with logistical or administrative questions

However, parents and support persons should not complete program tasks on behalf of the candidate or directly perform job responsibilities. Our goal is to ensure that each placement accurately reflects the candidate’s independent abilities and leads to long-term success.

HOW DOES MIND SHIFT DIFFER FROM TRADITIONAL JOB COACHING MODELS?

Unlike traditional job coaching programs that provide continuous, on-site support, Mind Shift operates as a staffing and placement agency. Our approach focuses on preparing candidates for independent employment and matching them with roles where they can succeed without ongoing in-person intervention.

This distinction is essential to maintaining strong partnerships with employers and creating opportunities for individuals who are ready to work independently with light-touch support.
